State Mates Frequently Asked Questions
Question: If we lose a 4-sided dice, where can we get more? Answer: You can search on Amazon for 4-sided dice (D4 Dice). Make sure you purchase the ones with the numbers showing on the apex (points) of the dice.
Question: During the Auction, what is the minimum raise for a bid? Answer: Increments of $10 billion are recommended, but you can make a bid as low as a $1 billion raise.
Question: What happens if you run out of time before the negotiated number of turns is met? Answer: The players decide to end the game, or the remaining players decide to keep the original number of turns or renegotiate the number of turns.
Question: Can you make a play (draw a R/P card) on the turn you purchase a state, or do you need to wait until a subsequent turn? Answer: You can’t make a purchase of a state unless you roll doubles (or triples), so when you do, you’re obliged to draw an R/P card on the same turn.
Question: When you land on a state that’s combined with an adjacent state, can you put your pawn on either state? Answer: Yes
Question: Can you go directly from Wisconsin and Minnesota to Michigan? Answer: You can go directly from Wisconsin to Michigan as it is connected to part of Michigan by land. You can’t go directly from Minnesota to Michigan without going through Wisconsin first — you can’t go via a lake route.
Question: Since Long Island is part of New York State, can you go directly from Long Island to Rhode Island? Answer: No, you can’t go across the Long Island Sound; you must go from New York State through Connecticut first.
Question: Is New York City adjacent to Connecticut? Answer: No, New York City is only adjacent to New York State and New Jersey.
Question: If you want to go from Vermont/New Hampshire to Maine, do you have to roll a total of 5 or less? Answer: Yes, you can’t leave Vermont/New Hampshire and then come back through them to go to Maine with a total roll higher than 5 on the same turn. (Note: Try to avoid being on Vermont/New Hampshire if you’re trying to get to Maine, as the odds of rolling a total of 3-5 is much lower than rolling a total of 6 or more).
STRATEGY: Everybody starts on Kansas, the middle state. You just acquired Illinois in the Auction and if you own both states of a given pairing, State Mates, and land on one of the two, you are allowed to double your earnings. Do you want to go West to buy Idaho, Illinois’ State Mate, or travel close by and buy Nebraska to block an opponent who owns Nebraska’s Mate which is New Jersey.
AN AUCTION STARTS THE GAME: Be ready to bid on the most valuable states to begin the game rather than leave it to chance by the roll of the dice.
NEVER GETS OLD: The results of the auction dictates the ever-changing stategy each time you play the game
GAME PLAY TESTED: Students realize a 30%+ average increase in geographical knowledge after playing the game just once
LEARNING STATE LOCATIONS & CLASS ROOM AID Your motivated to learn state locations because the game gives you vested interest in knowing where the states are and how to get there. STEM Authenticated.
